John has welcomed the call by the Scottish Government for control over Transport Police in Scotland. The announcement made yesterday (7th August) called on the UK Government to accelerate developments to devolve responsibility for the British Transport Police in Scotland.
The Cabinet Secretary for Justice Kenny MacAskill has held talks with the UK Government but is now urging the UK Government to move faster and being a “speedy” handover.
Commenting on the issue John said:
“I am pleased to see that the Scottish Government is putting pressure on the UK Government to devolve responsibility for the Transport Police in Scotland. I wrote to the Scottish Government in 2011, in light of the then upcoming single police force, asking them to examine the benefits of bringing the Transport Police in Scotland into the single force.
“I look forward to the control of policing the railways being devolved to Scotland so that we can ensure policing more responsive to local needs.”
