John Gets Answers on G8 Police Questions

On the 13th of May 2013 John lodged a series of questions to the Scottish Government, which can be seen below. Disappointingly many replies indicated that the Scottish Government couldn’t supply the information, instead answering “This is an operational matter for the Chief Constable.

Question S4W-14912: To ask the Scottish Government what assurances it can give that Police Scotland officers and staff deployed at the G8 summit in Northern Ireland will not be subject to litigation due to any lack of knowledge of Northern Irish law.

Question S4W-14910: To ask the Scottish Government what assurances it can give that Police    Scotland officers and staff will not be subject to any operational direction by, nor participate in joint patrols with, (a) the UK military and (b) private security firms while deployed at the G8 summit in Northern Ireland.

Question S4W-14907: To ask the Scottish Government what assurances it can give that Police Scotland officers and staff will have adequate radio communications while travelling to and from and while on deployment at the G8 summit in Northern Ireland.

Question S4W-14905: To ask the Scottish Government whether Police Scotland and its predecessors has/have bought additional equipment for the G8 summit in Northern Ireland and, if so, what equipment; who sanctioned the purchase; what the cost was, and who the suppliers were.

Question S4W-14901: To ask the Scottish Government whether Police Scotland officers deployed at the G8 summit in Northern Ireland will be using armoured vehicles and, if so, who owns those vehicles.

Question S4W-14900: To ask the Scottish Government whether the Police Scotland helicopter will be deployed to the G8 summit in Northern Ireland.

Question S4W-14899: To ask the Scottish Government what assurances it can give that (a) efficient policing and (b) the safety of communities will not be compromised as a result of Police Scotland officers and staff being deployed at the G8 summit in Northern Ireland.

Question S4W-14896: To ask the Scottish Government what types of specialist Police Scotland (a) officers and (b) staff will be deployed at the G8 summit in Northern Ireland.

Following this answer from the Scottish Government, which John received on the 28th of May, John sent the questions directly to Chief Constable House for his comments. The response can be seen below

Commenting on the response Mr Finnie said:

“I appreciate Police Scotland’s efforts in providing as much information as possible in regards to the roles and logistics of Scottish Police Officers serving at the G8 summit in Northern Ireland.

“Such oversight of police operations is vital in reassuring the public that public safety will not be affected during extraordinary circumstances such as the G8 Summit. I hope that such openness will continue to be a feature of Police Scotland.”
