John has told Danny Alexander, MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey, to get a move on and take the case for a fuel discount for remote parts of mainland Scotland to Europe.
John has written to Mr Alexander after it was revealed that he [Alexander] is now convinced that the case for a 5p fuel discount is strong enough to take to the EU for approval.
Speaking on the issue John said:
“In 2010 Danny Alexander campaigned in Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey on this issue and promised his constituents on the door steps, in leaflets and at hustings, that if elected he would introduce at discount to rural areas of the Highlands.
“Over three years later we are told that Mr Alexander is only now convinced the case is strong enough to take to Europe and although no definitive list of areas which would be set to benefit has been published, none of the areas speculated to be in line for the discount are in his constituency.
“I have written to Mr Alexander asking him when he intends to make the case in Brussels, which areas will benefit from the discount and an assurance that the discount will be passed directly to the consumer.
“We have seen record increases in fuel costs in our remote and rural communities in the years it has taken for Mr Alexander to take action on this issue, he has to get a move on.”
