John has welcomed the announcement by Highland Council that it is examining what it can do to mitigate the effects of the Bedroom Tax.
In a press release put out yesterday Council Leader Councillor Drew Hendry said :”We will ask the Committee to consider a proposal that for a transitional period of one year, where the Directors of Housing & Property and Finance are satisfied that tenants who are subject to the bedroom tax are doing all they reasonably can to avoid falling into arrears, the Council will use all legitimate means to collect rent due, except eviction.”
Highland Council’s Welfare Reform Working Group have asked that report be prepared to help reassure any vulnerable tenants.
Commenting John said:
“I’m pleased that Highland Council is examining the proposal from my colleague Jean Urquhart MSP and I that there should be no evictions as a result of the bedroom tax. I hope that other public and social landlords across the region will follow Highland Council’s example.
